Did you know that NASA, the space exploration division of the United States government first developed memory foam mattresses? The fact is, this material was not intended to be used as a part of a bed, but rather to protect astronauts. A Brief History 

In 1966, NASA’s Ames Research Center was looking for ways to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. Two men, Charles A Yost and Chiharu Kubokawa developed memory foam. After discovering just how effective this product was, it was commercialized to be included in x ray table pads and sports equipment, including placed inside football helmets as liners. In the 1980’s, NASA released the patent on the product. That is when a company called Fagerdala World Foams started working with it. They later used it in the Tempur Pedic Swedish Mattress is created in 1991. Later, an entire company would be dedicated to these mattresses named Tempur World. 

Although it was too expensive to use in most situations during its early inception, today, memory foam is far less expensive and numerous companies make these mattresses. More so, the original product has changed so much so that many companies have developed eco friendly mattresses using the same memory foam technology. 

What Is It? Memory foam is made from a polyurethane with additional additives which help to increase the density and the viscosity of the material. It is also visco elastic polyurethane foam. What makes it so unique is the way that it molds against the body. When the material gets warm, such as from the touch of the body, it molds quickly to the shape of the body.
